Things to Do in Shrewsbury

Among the town’s museums are the Castle military museum now being built, but already with a permanent display illustrating Shrewsbury’s past; Rowley’s Museum (Open All Year-D, except Sun-days) at Hill Lane, has some things brought across from Wroxeter, the Roman city of Viriconium; and Clive House (Open All Year-D, except Sundays), a lovely Georgian house on College Hill where Lord Clive lived for a time, so that he could get the required residential qualification to become mayor. Lots of pottery and porcelain is included in the collections.

What else does the town offer? The Music Hall has all sorts of entertainments from all-in wrestling to drama, the Social Club has the occasional guest star and Tiffany’s ballroom has cabaret sometimes as well as the dancing. Swimming pool, golf, pitch and putt and fishing are available and there is the Frankwell Riverside Trail which goes along the Severn and to the terraces of the town – a trail worth taking. Outside the town there are watersports at Telford, canoeing at Ironbridge and sailing at Ellesmere. Flying clubs at Church Stretton and skydiving (l) at the Shrewsbury Skydiving Centre, with courses for beginners at Forton Airfield, Shrewsbury. Pony trekking and riding, golf at Hawkstone Park, Hill Valley and Telford, all with 18 hole courses.
